Peter Baldwin, professor of history at UCLA, has a good, succinct piece in TNR summing up the pickle the European Union finds itself in. I’ve said it numerous times and will say it yet again: all this is ultimately the fault of France. It was the French (Giscard d’Estaing) who wanted Greece in the EC, it was the French (Mitterrand and Delors) who led the charge for EMU, and it was the French (Chirac and Jospin) who pushed to bring Greece into the euro. If it had been up to the Germans and/or Brits, it is unlikely any of these things would have happened. Désolé mais ce que je dis est vrai.
